Frank & Max Evans

Frank & Max Evans

Genre: Appalachian, Multi-Instrumentalist, Old Tyme, Roots

Max and Frank Evans grew up in Toronto and were raised by a family of classical musicians. At the age of 10 Frank decided to play the clawhammer banjo but after a family trip to West Virginia, Max was hooked on Old Time music as well. Max picked up the fiddle and in no time the brothers had become a fearsome duo. Regular trips to Clifftop Appalachian Stringband Festival afforded the opportunity to learn first-hand from masters steeped in the tradition, while the Old Time music scene in Toronto provided regular opportunities to jam with legends like Chris Coole and members of the Foggy Hogtown Boys.  In 2008 the brothers released a duo album ‘Big Meal Time’. Shortly thereafter, they formed Kitgut Stringband with their father, Neal Evans on bass. Kitgut performed weekly in Kensington Market in Toronto for three years, recording the album Rebel Raid in 2010. Max moved to Montreal to study Sculpture at Concordia University, and promptly formed the All Day Breakfast Stringband. The band has been an active force in Montreal’s Old Time community, and is popular throughout Quebec and Ontario. All Day Breakfast released its first album ‘Shanghai’ in September of 2015, winning the hearts of many listeners. Frank broke convention once again when he became the first banjo player to attend the Jazz Program at Humber College of Music. In 2010 Frank founded the Slocan Ramblers, a bluegrass band which continues to win critical acclaim. Their debut album, ‘Shaking Down the Acorns’ won them the opportunity to be the opening act for Steve Martin. Their second album, ‘Coffee Creek’ (2015) placed them on the mainstage at Merlefest. Max continues to pursue his career as a visual artist, while playing fiddle in a variety of ensembles and genres. Frank resides in Toronto and is in high demand as a session player, recording artist, teacher and performer.
