A LIVE, INTERACTIVE, VIRTUAL ZOOM CONCERT and live Q & A with the artists.
At this virtual song-circle, Home Routes is thrilled to present these award winning songwriters LIVE and in the round.
Picture sitting around a campfire with Jonathan Byrd, Ivan Coyote & Crys Matthews, swapping songs and the stories behind them – that is what this show will be like, full of clever storytelling, hope-fueled and love-filled songs. As Ivan describes the show ‘Audiences will feel like you are sitting around a campfire with the midnight sun just skimming the tops of the pine trees and the lake calm like glass beside you. At some point in the night the you will hear a story that rattles a story ghost loose in your own chest – a story of how a broken father passes cracks onto his children, a story that conjures up and honours a beloved grandmother, a story that speaks to and celebrates the misfit in all of us.’
About Jonathan Byrd → Jonathan Byrd, a Southern Baptist preacher’s son, Gulf War veteran, and award-winning songwriter and poet from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Jonathan is a songwriter’s songwriter, guitarist’s guitarist, and an authentic performer with a southern smoky baritone. Jonathan’s songs have been sung by Anais Mitchell, the Bros. Landreth, Sam Bush, and many others. This past Valentine’s Day, Byrd released his second book of poems, a collection that touches on the erotic called Devotion.
About Ivan Coyote → Yukon born-and-raised Ivan Coyote is a writer and storyteller, who tells stories that can make you laugh and then cry in the same honest and raw moment. Their stories grapple with the complex and intensely personal topics of gender identity, family, class, and queer liberation, but always with a generous heart, and a quick wit. As the author of thirteen books, the creator of four films, six stage shows, and three albums that combine storytelling with music, Coyote’s books have won the ReLit Award, been named a Stonewall Honour Book, been longlisted for Canada Reads, and been shortlisted for the Hilary Weston Prize for non-fiction. In 2017 Ivan was given an honorary Doctor of Laws from Simon Fraser University for their writing and activism. Ivan’s 13th book, Care Of, will be released in June 2021.
About Crys Matthews → A troubadour of truth, Crys Matthews is among the brightest stars of the new generation of social justice music-makers. An award-winning, prolific lyricist and composer, Matthews blends Americana, folk, blues, bluegrass, and funk into a bold, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies punctuated by honest, original lyrics. She is made for these times. Of Matthews, ASCAP VP & Creative Director Eric Philbrook says, “By wrapping honest emotions around her socially conscious messages and dynamically delivering them with a warm heart and a strong voice, she lifts our spirits just when we need it most in these troubled times.” Justin Hiltner of Bluegrass Situation adds, her gift is a “reminder of what beauty can occur when we bridge those divides.” Her new, hope-fueled, love-filled, social-justice album called Changemakers was just released March 26.
