Watermelon Slim

Bill “Watermelon Slim” Homans’ legend as a working bluesman has accumulated through a colourful lifetime of  lived experiences that has earned him the praise of PASTE magazine as “one hell of a bottleneck guitarist and he’s got that cry in his voice that only the greatest singers in the genre have had before him.” His remarkable journey began in a Vietnam hospital bed, where he taught himself upside-down left-handed guitar on a $5 balsa wood model using a pick fashioned from a rusty coffee can top and an Army-issued Zippo in lieu of a slide. In the decades since, he’s earned 17 Blues Music Award nominations in four years and a record-setting number of wins that rivals the likes of B.B. King, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray.

Slim’s diverse background, from Vietnam service to farming watermelons in Oklahoma, has added a genuine grit to his music, and further honed to a hard-edged passion for life by a near-fatal heart attack in 2002, resulting in the raw, heartfelt songs he performs today.
